Nursing week in Rwanda

Nursing week is an international week which normally celebrated from 06 to 12 May every year. All over the wold they also celebrate Nursing day which was linked to the birthday of Nightingale Florence the mother of Nursing profession.

In Rwanda we used to celebrate Nursing day but we did not manage to undertake nursing week too. Therefore from 25 to 29 June 2018, by aid of NMSAR this NURSING WEEK CELEBRATION  was launched officially in Rwamagana District of Eastern Province. During this week the community outreach was carried out and people were screened for NCDS,  Voluntary HIV testing, awareness and malnutrition eradication.

THE MINUTES OF THE 2ND NMSAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY


SESSION ONE OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY
In reference to the article 15 of the NMSAR Constitution, on 05th May 2018 the NMSAR 2nd General Assembly has convened and chaired by Jean d’Amour BARABWIRIZA, NMSAR Founder and President. The total of 76 participants from 6 institutions offering Nursing and Midwifery education attended the Assembly.

Firstly, the assembly started by NMSAR President by welcoming the participants according to their institution, also the welcome goes to the special invitees including the guest of honour Mr SHEJE Innocent, the General Secretary of Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU).
NMSAR President also presented in brief the short background and mission of NMSAR which is to building the better future education of Nursing and Midwifery profession in Rwanda, he explained the theme of the assembly in this statement: “The Strong Leadership is a Core to Build the Better Future of Nurses and Midwives Professionals in Rwanda.”

Secondary, there was the presentation of achievements enclosed in the Annual Report of Academic Year NMSAR 2016-2017 as presented by Thaddee UWIMANA, Co-founder and Senior Advisor in National Transition Committee. This annual report is annexed on this minute.

Thirdly, NMSAR Vice President presented the Action Plan for academic year 2017-2018 and as it mentioned by article 16 in the constitution of NMSAR, the action plan has to be approved by the General Assembly, the fact that the bellow listed suggestions were given before approval:
*      The action plan should be quickly decentralized and emphasises the recognition of the association at school levels committee.
*      For the election to be affordable for all members, the campuses can be allowed to vote their representative for the GA candidates.
*      Focusing on the advocacy so that the NCNM exams for graduates should be done once the students are still at their respective schools.
*      Strengthening and concizing the NMSAR and RNMU partnership for the explicitly of our MoU.

Fifth, the guest of honour, the General Secretary of Rwanda nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) took the floor and presented the background of RNMU, which start in 1990s; The background of nursing and midwifery in Rwanda from 1990s. He also briefly explained the process of advocacy RNMU done for nurses and midwives on licensing exams that should be held in favourable condition for all nurses and midwives and the needs for licensing exams. He also presented the importance of syndicalism in impacting the change and capacity building.
He also explained the online facilitation on CPD provision RNMU is providing in the process of renewing the licences which are available on RNMU website, it is for nurses and midwives profession and knowledge improvement.
The least of importance of RNMU for its members also have been given:
-        Legal advocacy
-        Students association funding
-        Assisting its members for burial
-        Paying CPD course for its members
Advice to NMSAR by RNMU General Secretary:
-        Having consolidated plan from campuses and schools to the national levels.
-        The association will have all requirements if it cooperates well
-        Handover of all graduated to get them known.
-        Activities that will be funded by RNMU
Time for suggestion and questions was given to the audience after presentation of the guest of honour and the following was asked:
The way for getting registration in RNMU for fresh graduates,
ü  It is free of charge to enter in RNMU, you only fill membership form and consent form.
ü  For the sensitisation of student will be through the NMSAR national descent
The chance for those who are in the health setting to get CPD that should help them passing the licensing exams.
ü  There is a process of shifting the exams to the campus levels so that they can do all the exam still at school
ü  There is a catch up program for those who have failed the exam.
It the nurses or midwife has passed the license why do they need to pass the exam for employment,
ü  The employment exam is to insure the transparency in the job and the workforce capacity

After all the certificates for appreciation were delivered to RNMU for the incomparable support given to NMSAR since its foundation and also founders and confounders were also given these certificates in recognition to the great work they did for the initiation of NMSAR. Moreover the closing remark for the first session was given by NMSAR President; the group photos were taken and finally the invitees gather for sharing lunch.

SECOND SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The second session of this General Assembly was mainly for election of NMSAR National Executive Committee for Academic Year 2017-2018.
NMSAR Arbitration Committee 2017-2018 has explained all the process used for receiving and choosing the qualified candidates for NMSAR National Executive Committee and a brief description of article 15, 16, 18 and 19 in NMSAR constitution which state the General Assembly responsibilities and election process was explained to the audience. Then after the General Assembly (GA) agreed to convene the election of NMSAR national committee. As it is prescribed in the Constitution, the elected committee will lead the association in the terms and regulations as they are in the NMSAR Constitution.
Before starting the election a short time was given to every candidate to give his commitment in serving NMSAR if elected; NMSAR National Executive Committee is voted in a full secret ballot and it is agreed and approved by the General assembly.
Therefore the National Executive Committee is made of the seven (7) members and this 2nd NMSAR General Assembly elected the following:

1.      President: TURIKUMWE Jean d’Amour, 40/76
2.      Vice president: UWASE Gaspard, 28/76
3.      Secretary: INGABIRE Mireille, 69/76
4.      Treasurer: UWIMANA ELIE, 58/76
5.      Three (3) Advisors:
     - KANYANA FLORENCE, 25/76
     - SIBOMANA ROGERS, 17/76
     - BINAYISA GAD, 11/76

The New Elected NMSAR President, TURIKUMWE Jean d’Amour, on behalf of the committee promise the members of association that he is going to work with the committee to bring the changes we want and make the bright future of the association through a strong team working spirit and  deep love of the nursing and midwifery profession.

The Closing remark given by BARABWIRIZA, President in NMSAR outgoing National Executive Committee emphasised on the dedication that goes firstly to Almighty God who did not let us down in whatever we did, the achievement of NMSAR also was given to the team of founder and cofounders for their great contributions. NMSAR also dedicate its achievement to RNMU for the financial it provided since its foundation till now. Moreover the huge thanks were given to all participants in the assembly.

At 3:20 PM the General Assembly was officially closed by Jean d’Amour BARABWIRIZA, all participants were given the transport fees as facilitation to go back to their home safely.

NMSAR ONLINE MEETING ON 23 JANUARY 2018

IMPORTANCE OF JOINING NMSAR
Some joined after realizing what they benefit and others joined following others, therefore I am here to list the least not last importance of owning  NMSAR Membership:
1. Networking: By joining NMSAR you are lucky to easily networking with your fellow students in same field from everywhere in the country.
2. Social Skills: As a student you are exposed  to learn how to talk to other people from different corners in our country. It is your opportunity to build some social skills.
3. Professional experience: As you joined NMSAR a professional  student association , you will get exposed to lot of professional career and help you build professionally.
4. Personality development: Your communication skills will improve because you are interacting with different people.
5. Alumni Networking: NMSAR will always try to bring in alumni and ask them to share their experiences. It is a wonderful opportunity for you learn from seniors who have graduated and get connected to them. It helps you with job search and mentoring.
6. Friendships and Fun: Life is not just about career and making money. It is about building friendships and having fun. You will get a chance to meet people and build good friendships. You will be part of the social activities and will have so much fun professionally.

Most of Nurses and Midwives Students are you enjoying the benefits of NMSAR. The past never come present is the best opportunity ever, don't wait future.
